Like its predecessors, the DR-3060 and DR-3020, the Canon DR-3080CII is a great little all-rounder...
(By the way, the 'CII' bit on the end simply means colour and USB2 connection - it still has a SCSI connection on the back if preferred, although USB2 should be fine)
Pretty easy to get set up, just make sure you've removed all the little pieces of orange tape Canon stick everywhere - inside as well as out!
As with all our tests we scanned the sample docs with Adobe, creating non-text searchable (for speed) files.
100 A4 Pages...
Took 2 mins 30 secs - bang on the quoted 40 ppm by Canon
Note: this was scanning at 300 dpi (high speed). This 'high speed' setting is unique to Canon (as far as we know) and it basically does a 300 x 150 dpi scan which is a clever way of increasing the speed without sacrificing on quality.
No problem feeding. The Canon sucked all 100 through with ease, and in one go... although 100 sheets was a bit of a squeeze. If you're planning on scanning lots of invoices, or older files with a lot of potential 'air' in between documents perhaps assume you'll get around 60 in the input feeding tray.
On the invoice test (mixed sizes and conditions) all went through very well, although all documents need to be fairly well pushed up the machine. Very small docs, such as till receipts etc, will go through but need to be in small batches (maybe half a dozen or so).
Due to the 'U' path of the DR-3080CII, card will struggle to feed and therefore it failed to feed any of our business cards.
Its fairly quiet too...
Without any kind of staple detection the DR-3080CII was fairly predictable in pulling the centre stapled sheets and jamming on the corner stapled sheets... which was quickly solved by opening up the scanner.
(IMPORTANT NOTE: please remove all staples prior to scanning!!... No manufacturers recommend you scan staples, paperclips etc - this will very quickly scratch the scanning lens and will not be covered in your warranty!)
When scanning a 2 page colour document in 24 bit colour, each page took 11 seconds.
The DR-3080CII also has a handy little feature of being able to scan folded A3 documents (one at a time though) and then stitching the front and rear image back together on the screen!
Conclusion
Great value for money - A good, solid all rounder! Ideal for scanning anything between 200 and 2000 A4 documents per day - Canon say it's good for 4500.
