The Canon DR-4010C is the latest addition to the Canon range. It is an A4 version of the DR-5010C and is likely to replace the old DR-3080CII in the coming months.
In the box you'll get a disc with the drivers, CapturePerfect (which is Canon's basic scanning application) and an electronic user manual. You'll also get a USB cable, UK and EU power lead, paper manual and the rollers for the scanner, which you have to fit yourself. Read on to find out how to do this.
The scanner feels a fair bit lighter than the DR-3080CII and when you start to use it you'll see that a lot of this weight loss has had an impact on the overall robustness of the unit.
Very easy to setup - took no more than 10 minutes. The only down side is that the rollers need fitting manually, which is a little fiddly. Although at least you'll know what to do if/when they need replacing. The driver and software installation took no time at all and was extremely straight-forward.
Fitting the rollers - start by opening up the scanner.
To insert the bottom roller, lift off the small strip of plastic and lift the green lever on the right - align the roller to the metal rod on the left and then slide the green lever back into place.
The top roller is inserted in a similar way - move the green lever across, clip the part into place and return the lever.
The chances are you will need to replace the rollers at some point. The same process of fitting will apply.
For the tests we scanned the sample documents in Adobe Acrobat at 200dpi black and white.
100 A4 Pages
Took 2 mins 19 secs - which is slightly slower than the quoted 42 pages per minute. The scanner performed very well, each page was taken cleanly - no double feeding or jamming. The feeder is quoted to take 100 sheets, which it did... just!
The next test was to see how the scanner coped with a mixed batch of invoices. It handled the pages fine, no double feeding at all. This test is always a good indication of how the scanner performs - not many people will be scanning lovely new printer paper on a daily basis! Some of the invoices were not readable because they were on very thin paper, but playing with the settings will solve this.
It started off well on the business card test - but then one did get stuck in the u-path. This was expected though!
The scanner is not the quietest of those tested, but is by no means too loud...
The scanner didn't stop when we tried scanning a stapled document. You can turn on the double feed detection setting within the driver - the scanner then stopped when the stapled batch went through, as it should.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please remove all staples prior to scanning. No manufacturers recommend you scan staples, paperclips etc - this will very quickly scratch the scanning lens and will not be covered in your warranty!
The Canon DR-4010C has an auto-colour detection feature, which in theory should identify whether a document is black and white or colour, and save accordingly. This will minimize the file size. When we tried it in Adobe there was an error which resulted in a completely un-readable file. We have had trouble in the past with Adobe when scanning colour documents, so we tried it in the supplied CapturePerfect - this worked fine. The scanner does go up to 600dpi if you want to enhance the quality even more - doing this will increase the time taken per sheet and the resultant file size. Possibly the best thing about the DR-4010C is it will scan at 42 pages per minute in colour! (at 300 dpi) We're unaware of ANY other scanner in this price range that will scan at the same speed in colour as in black and white.
Conclusion
This is a lovely little scanner - and for the price you are getting what seems to be a reliable and quick unit. The issues mentioned above with scanning to colour in Adobe seem to be quite common with other scanners too, and most users will be using the software provided, so don't let it put you off! Also, don't let the fact that it isn't as sturdy as the 3080 put your off either - it is quicker than the 3080 and better looking, not that aesthetics should play a huge part in deciding whether or not you should buy a scanner! Plus, as mentioned above, if you have a lot of colour scanning to do, whilst other scanners will slow down, this one lets the pages fly though at full speed!
