The Panasonic KVS7065C is an A3 document and flatbed colour scanner. For obvious reason this makes the machine a big heavy piece of kit and it actually took two of us to unload it from the packaging. Realistically you would not be able to have this machine on your desk unless you have a big desk and lots of room for it!
Within the box you will find the power cable, USB cable, software disk, instruction manual and feed tray. The scanner was very simple to set up - this took around 15 minutes. One tip when setting the scanner up is to plug the USB cable in before you put the scanner in its resting place because the port is situated in an awkward place. All the software is self explanatory with an on-screen wizard making it a quick process.
As usual we have put the scanner through a number of everyday tests to try and assess how they cope with a varied number of scans.
The Panasonic KVS7065C is a full colour duplex document scanner accepting documents from business cards up to A3 in size; it has a speed of 60 pages per minute and has a sheet feeder which will hold up to around 200 sheets. The KVS7065C scanned 100 text documents in 1 minute 37 seconds. One advantage of an A3 scanner is that you can also feed the pages through landscape which is slightly quicker at 1 minute 35 seconds but unfortunately it did double feed on two separate occasions doing this. The first test was 100 A4 sheets scanned at 200dpi black and white.
The scanner has a u-path feeding mechanism, so we were not expecting the scanner to take business cards through. It did it's best but a couple of business cards jammed and were damaged after scanning. With the KVS7065C this is not a huge issue because it does also have the flatbed which is ideal for scanning business cards and other card documents.
As always it is not recommended to scan staples or paperclips and therefore the preparation is very important. However, accidents do happen and when we tested the KVS7065C it took the stapled document straight through as normal. Although it is good that the scanner did take the page through we do need to know what has happened and this can easily be missed. If you set the scanner to auto detect a double feed, the scanner will either beep or stop scanning, making you aware that the scanner has double fed and therefore you don't run the risk of missing that all important scan.
(PLEASE NOTE: remove all staples prior to scanning!!... No manufactures recommend that you scan staples - this will very quickly scratch the lens and will not be covered in your warranty! Although it is time consuming, preparation of documents is key)
The A3 flatbed is simple to use, all you need to do is move the document feeder up and lift the flatbed to use. When you use the flatbed you will need to select the size of the scan otherwise it will automatically scan A3 size and thus leave a large black border around the page. The size can be selected at point of scanning within the driver window.
All of the Panasonic scanners come built with RTIV (Reliable Throughput Image Viewer). This software is great, very handy for image enhancement and comes completely free with the scanner. Some of the benefits the software includes, Auto Binary/Color Distinction, Multi Color Dropout, Blank Page Removal, Double Exposure, Smooth Background, Automatic Cropping and De-skewing, Dynamic Threshold to name a few.
Conclusion
A scanner that can not only scan A3 documents a very fast and reliable but also offers the flatbed option to ensure that you can scan anything that you need to at a high level. A good scanner for a busy workforce which will cope with any number of different scans to ensure that you are happy with your purchase!
